United States Mint: American gold, Liberty and the buffalo
The United States Mint has produced American coins since 1792. In the precious metals market, it is particularly renowned for the American Eagle and American Buffalo series. Their designs combine symbols of American history with different metal compositions that buyers should understand.
A mint serving the United States
The United States Mint manufactures circulation coins, commemoratives, medals and bullion products. Its history is closely connected with the development of the American monetary system.
Modern bullion coins often revisit distinctive designs from earlier American coinage. This connects today’s precious metal purchases with the minting artistry of the past.
American Eagle: gold and silver
The American Eagle programme began in 1986 with gold and silver bullion coins. The gold version features Liberty inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, while the silver coin uses the familiar Walking Liberty design.
The Gold American Eagle is made from a 22-karat alloy. The one-ounce version contains a full troy ounce of fine gold, plus alloying metals that increase its total weight.
Its lower fineness therefore does not mean that buyers receive less than the stated amount of gold.
American Buffalo: a fine gold alternative
The American Buffalo was introduced in 2006. Made from gold of 999.9/1000 fineness, its designs are based on the American five-cent coin of 1913.
One side depicts a Native American portrait, while the other shows an American bison. It offers an alternative to the American Eagle for buyers who prefer 24-karat gold.
The same metal content, different finishes
The United States Mint also offers collector versions of its coins. Bullion, proof and other finishes can differ in appearance, packaging and price.
When choosing, compare the specific version, fine metal content and purchase premium. For collector pieces, also consider condition and mintage.
At Golden House, we will be happy to help you choose American bullion or collector coins from our current range.
