Monnaie de Paris: the French mint turning precious metal into art

Monnaie de Paris draws on a history dating to 864. The French mint combines coin production with artistic craftsmanship in gold and silver. Its collector coins celebrate historical events, cultural symbols and contemporary themes, appealing to customers seeking more than metal alone.

A tradition dating to 864

Monnaie de Paris traces its origins to Charles the Bald’s decision to establish a Parisian minting workshop in 864. Today, it is one of France’s oldest institutions.

Its historic Paris premises produce collector issues, medals and artistic objects, among other products. Circulation coins have been manufactured at the Pessac facility since 1973.

Coins that tell a story

A characteristic feature of Monnaie de Paris is the connection between minting craftsmanship and a theme. Alongside traditional designs such as La Semeuse, the Sower, it creates issues commemorating historical anniversaries.

Customers can choose according to their interest in a particular period, person or artistic design. A coin can become part of a collection or a personal gift.

Metal content is not the whole price

Collector coin prices are not determined solely by their gold or silver content. Limited mintages, minting quality, design, packaging and demand for a particular issue can also influence the price.

A higher purchase price does not necessarily mean more precious metal. Likewise, the description “silver coin” alone does not tell you its fineness.

Always check the weight, composition and specific finish before buying.

Caring for collector coins

For presentation editions, it is advisable to retain the original capsule, case and any accompanying certificate. Avoid touching the surface with your fingers or cleaning coins with ordinary household products.

Good condition and complete packaging may matter when selling later. Future collector value also depends on demand and is not guaranteed.

At Golden House, we will be happy to help you choose a French coin according to its theme, your budget and your intended purpose.
