Argor-Heraeus: a Swiss refinery that combines tradition with innovation
Argor-Heraeus is one of Switzerland’s leading precious metal refiners. Since its foundation in 1951, it has built up an international reputation for its precision craftsmanship, wide range of investment bars and innovations, including its distinctive Kinebar technology.
From Ticino’s First Refinery to a Global Manufacturer
The history of Argor-Heraeus began in 1951 in Mendrisio, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. According to the company, it was the first precious metal refinery established in the region. From the outset, it focused on gold refining and processing, later expanding its activities to include silver, platinum and palladium.
Over the following decades, the regional company developed into an internationally recognised refinery operating across several parts of the precious metals supply chain. In addition to refining, it provides laboratory testing, manufactures cast and minted bars, produces coins and medals and develops solutions for industrial customers.
A significant milestone in the company’s history was its integration into the German Heraeus Group. In 2017, Argor-Heraeus became a wholly owned subsidiary of Heraeus Precious Metals. The production of investment bars, however, remains closely associated with the Swiss facility in Mendrisio.
Swiss Precision in Every Bar
Argor-Heraeus investment bars are produced from gold with a fineness of 999.9. The range includes smaller minted bars suitable for gradually building a gold reserve, as well as larger cast bars intended for higher-value investments.
The minted bars are characterised by a clean, technical design. The front usually displays the refinery’s logo, country of origin, weight, metal type and fineness. It also bears the mark of the refinery’s authorised assayer.
Smaller minted bars are generally sealed in protective packaging together with a certificate of authenticity. The packaging protects the surface of the bar and contains information allowing it to be precisely identified.
Kinebar: When Security Becomes Part of the Design
One of Argor-Heraeus’s best-known innovations is Kinebar. First introduced in 1993, it has become one of the most distinctive products of the Swiss refinery.
The reverse side of selected minted bars features a special optical KINEGRAM element. As the angle of the light changes, it creates colourful and dynamic visual effects. It is therefore not merely a decorative feature, but also an element that improves product recognition and makes imitation more difficult.
Similar optical technologies are used on banknotes, passports and other security documents. Argor-Heraeus is the only refinery authorised to apply the KINEGRAM to precious metal bars as both a decorative and security feature.
Kinebar therefore combines three qualities valued by investors: the intrinsic value of gold, Swiss manufacturing quality and an easily recognisable visual element.
Classic Bars, Cast Bars and Themed Editions
The Argor-Heraeus portfolio is not limited to Kinebar products. Its core range consists of classic minted and cast investment bars in a wide selection of weights.
Smaller minted bars are suitable for investors who wish to purchase gold gradually or retain greater flexibility when selling it in the future. Larger cast bars usually offer a more favourable price per gram of precious metal, but require a higher initial investment.
In addition to standard investment products, the refinery also produces lunar, commemorative and themed series. These may offer a gift or collectible dimension in addition to the intrinsic value of the gold. With limited-edition products, however, it is always advisable to distinguish between the value of the precious metal itself and any premium paid for the design, packaging or limited mintage.
Recognition on the International Market
Argor-Heraeus is included on the LBMA Good Delivery Lists for gold and silver. These lists contain refineries whose large standardised bars meet the strict requirements of the professional global market regarding fineness, dimensions, weight, markings and manufacturing processes.
It is important to note that Good Delivery does not represent a separate certification of every smaller investment bar. It concerns specific standard bars and the refinery’s production processes for the professional market. For private investors, however, a manufacturer’s inclusion in this system is an important indication of its international reputation and technical standards.
Argor-Heraeus is also one of a small number of refineries worldwide acting as referees for the LBMA Good Delivery programme. In this role, it contributes to the technical assessment of other refineries and helps maintain standards across the global gold and silver market.
Responsible Sourcing and Gold Traceability
In addition to the quality of the finished product, increasing attention is being paid to the origin of gold and the transparency of the entire supply chain.
Argor-Heraeus declares its commitment to the responsible sourcing of precious metals and also offers product lines based on traceable gold. With these products, the journey of the metal can be followed from a specific source through to the finished product.
In 2025, the company introduced new ranges of origin-traced gold focused, among other things, on supporting responsible artisanal and small-scale mining. These products are intended to allow customers to combine an investment in physical gold with greater transparency regarding its origin.
The origin of gold is important not only from an environmental perspective, but also in reducing risks associated with illegal mining, human rights violations, money laundering and conflict financing.
Why Are Argor-Heraeus Bars Popular with Investors?
The popularity of Argor-Heraeus bars is primarily based on the combination of Swiss origin, a long history, international recognition and a broad selection of available weights.
Classic bars appeal to investors looking for a straightforward and widely tradable product. Kinebar is attractive to customers who value not only the investment value, but also a sophisticated security feature and more distinctive appearance.
When selecting a particular bar, it is advisable to consider:
- the price per gram of gold,
- the difference between the purchase and repurchase price,
- the desired flexibility when selling in the future,
- the method of storage and protection of the original packaging,
- whether the primary purpose is investment, gifting or collecting.
Smaller bars make it possible to sell an investment gradually, but their price per gram is generally higher. Larger bars are usually more cost-effective, but cannot be divided when sold.
Argor-Heraeus is an example of a refinery that has successfully combined traditional Swiss precious metal processing with modern manufacturing and security technologies. Kinebar in particular demonstrates that even a classic investment bar can offer a recognisable design and an advanced protective feature.
Argor-Heraeus Gold Bars Available from Golden House
Golden House offers classic minted and cast Argor-Heraeus gold bars in a variety of weights, as well as selected Kinebar versions.
When choosing a bar, we recommend considering not only its appearance, but above all the price per gram, the intended investment amount and the desired flexibility in the event of a future sale.
Smaller weights may be suitable for regularly building a gold reserve or as a valuable gift. Larger bars generally offer a more favourable price per gram of gold and are suitable for investing a higher amount in a single product.
We will be pleased to advise you on the most suitable weight or version, either in person at our showroom or through our customer support team.
