Obverse of the 7.32 g Full Sovereign 2026 gold coin
The obverse of the Sovereign coin features the classic motif of St. George slaying the dragon. The design of the mythical dragon slayer comes from Italian gem carver and later chief medallist of the Royal Mint, Benedetto Pistrucci (*1787 Rome – 1855 Englefield Green near Windsor). Saint George is depicted dressed as an ancient hero, riding a horse to the right, piercing the dragon lying on the ground with a short sword raised in his right hand. On the first Sovereigns issued in 1817, Saint George still held a long spear, which he used against the monster and which broke.
Pistrucci's contemporaries regarded the coin's design as an allegorical representation of Great Britain's victory over Napoleon, who was perceived as a tyrant and who, in 1815, led to a new order in Europe under the Congress of Vienna. The initials "B.P." for Benedetto Pistrucci can be seen in the lower part of the coin.
Thanks to its high artistic quality, Pistrucci's coin motif of St. George slaying the dragon is still considered one of the most beautiful coin motifs in the United Kingdom. It is therefore not surprising that, as part of the long tradition of the gold sovereign, the Royal Mint has minted this coin motif on the obverse of its sovereigns only for relatively short periods.
Reverse side of the 2026 Full Sovereign gold coin
The Latin inscription on the reverse side of the Sovereign coin, which has been used since 1998, is the same as on the previous minting: "CHARLES III DEI GRA REX FID DEF". Translated, this inscription means "King Charles, by the grace of God, King and Defender of the Faith". This inscription expresses that the monarch is not only king by the grace of God, but also the head of the Anglican Church. The portrait shows the British king looking to the left.
The edge of the Sovereign gold coin is serrated and without inscription to protect against tampering.
The gold Sovereign coin has no face value, but is nevertheless legal tender in the United Kingdom with a face value of "1 pound sterling."
