Dandelion Silver Coin 1/2 oz Proof 2022

The second coin in the Language of Flowers series is dedicated to a plant that divides public opinion. To some, the dandelion is just a nuisance weed, to others, it is the most underrated plant. Whichever side of the debate you are on, the dandelion is undoubtedly one of the most joyous signs that winter is over and spring has arrived. The dandelion’s golden yellow flower, serrated leaves and spherical seed pod make it instantly recognisable. Unlike most other plants, the dandelion is responsible for numerous myths and superstitions that specifically concern its seed head. Some say that wishes made while blowing on the plant’s seeds will come true, others that you can send a message to a loved one by concentrating on what you would like to convey while blowing the seeds in their direction. It is therefore no surprise that the dandelion represents ‘wishes granted’ in the language of flowers. This idea is beautifully illustrated on the obverse of the coin, in the shape of a young woman with flowers in her hair blowing dandelion seeds. Alongside the ornamental side image of a dandelion, stylishly printed in colour, the reverse of the coin features an impression of a real dandelion with open and closed flowers. People have used dandelions as both a food and herbal remedy for centuries; they also provide an important source of food for birds and insects at the start of the season. Many believe the plant has mystical and magical properties, with much of its folklore relating to its ability to answer questions or bring good luck. Dandelions are also associated with perseverance, strength in the face of adversity, clear intention and are thought to impart lion-like courage. They are even said to represent the qualities of warmth, glow, illumination, healing, hope, transformation and growth. So what’s not to love about this hardy little “weed”?
