The Britannia silver bullion coin has been minted by the British Royal Mint since 1997. Since 1997, it has been minted in a purity of .958, or 95.8% silver and 4.2% copper, and in weights of 1/10 Oz, 1/4 Oz, 1/2 Oz and 1 Oz. The ounce coin weighed exactly 32.454 g and contained the weight of an ounce (1 Oz - 31.1g) of pure silver. Since 2013, it has been minted in a purity of 99.9%.
Since 2021, the coin has included additional security features: a sophisticated wave pattern and picosecond laser technology that creates the illusion of movement when the coin is turned. The laser-etched microtext inscription "DECUS ET TUTAMEN" is repeated on the edge defining the transition between the main Britannia motif and the ring. An inner circle concealing a latent security motif (trident/padlock) is located in the lower left part. The Britannia shield is filled with fine lines. The reverse depicts a warrior goddess in flowing robes and a Corinthian helmet on top of a cliff, embodying the unwavering pride of the nation. The ring of the coin features the inscription BRITANNIA, the year of issue and information on the purity and weight of the metal. The obverse of the 1 oz (one troy ounce) Britannia coin shows the profile of King Charles III in a version specially designed for a series of commemorative coins to mark his coronation. The portrait of the king, created by British sculptor Martin Jennigs, is complemented by a Tudor crown. The coin is engraved with the inscription CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D" and the face value. The initials of the designer "MJ" are included.
