Originating in medieval Italy, the ducat was first minted in Austria in the early 16th century. While it lost its legal tender status in 1857, the 1 and 4 ducat pieces were used as commercial coins until 1915, the year shown on these magnificent modern bullion coins. Although the coin design was first minted in 1872, the reverse is engraved with the year of the last minting of these coins in 1915. This year was also the half-century before the death of Emperor Franz Joseph, who ruled Austria-Hungary for 68 years. His profile adorns the beautiful obverse of the coin. The ducats are available in denominations of 1 or 4 ducats.
