Krugerrand – the most famous and most respected investment coin in the world. This gold investment coin is minted from 916/1000 gold with a small amount of copper (8.333%). The addition of copper increases the coin’s resistance to scratching and also gives it a characteristic color. It is worth noting that the quarter-ounce Krugerrand contains 1/4 ounce of pure (24-karat) gold.
Gold coins with the springbok motif have been minted continuously since 1967. Initially, they were produced only in one ounce, but from 1980, variants weighing 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 of an ounce of gold were also introduced. The name of the coin was created by combining the words "Kruger" (the surname of the former president) and "rand" - the name of the currency of the Republic of South Africa.
Krugerrands are produced by the South African mint, Rand Refinery. They are fully legal tender, with the authenticity, fineness of the metal and origin of the gold guaranteed by the South African government. Interestingly, although the Krugerrand is official currency, it does not have a face value. This means that the South African Reserve Bank is obliged to redeem the coins at the current market price of gold.
The obverse features a portrait of President Paul Kruger with the inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA".
The reverse features a springbok antelope – the national symbol of South Africa. The year of minting is shown on either side of the antelope, with the inscription “Fyngoud 1/4 oz fine gold” below, indicating the fine gold content.
